Dog show and Sept. books
Oct. 9th, 2005 07:25 pmDid anyone else watch the dog show on Animal Planet last night? I thought the German Shepherd was a beauty, but was more partial to the Golden Retriever. (And I thought of you, Fiona, when they showed the beagles :)
I'd love to go to a show - must look up what it'd cost.
Life still the same - no job, no money, crazy kitty. Mom's having a weird medical thing - spasms in her left leg - her doc sent her to a neurologist, who scheduled an MRI and an electrical something test to check on nerve damage. Nothing really showed up, and Mom remembered to tell him about having surgery on her right knee, so now she's got an appointment with an orthopedic dr. She's okay during the morning - it usually starts sometimes in the late afternoon/evening - her leg just jerks like someone is shaking it. It doesn't hurt, unless the shaking is severe, but she has to stop walking and sit/stand and wait for it to stop - which is hella inconvenient, and her leg is weak right before & after, but not any other time. Is weird.
Fantasy:
Od Magic by Patricia A. McKillip - love her stuff.
The Darkangel, A Gathering of Gargoyles, and The Pearl of the Soul of the World by Meredith Ann Pierce - got these on a Bookcrossing book ring - enjoyed them, but wasn't enthralled.
SF:
Honor Among Enemies by David Weber - a reread, the only Honor Harrington I reread this month. And I'm upset that my library doesn't have the next one, but does have the ones after it. *I* have the next one - in a box in my storage unit, where it does me absolutely no good. Am contemplating getting a second copy and donating it to the library after I reread it - since I have the next 3 checked out.
More Than Honor by David Weber, David Drake, and S.M. Stirling - a trio of stories in the HH universe, plus some universe technical information. Loved the Weber story(was about the treecats!), liked the Stirling, didn't care for the Drake or the tech stuff.
Mysteries (of the more traditional sort):
Rituals of the Season by Margaret Maron - love this series
Vineyard Prey by Philip R. Craig - he did a crossover with another series I like, so I started reading his stuff too. Like the Tapply books better, though.
Long Time Gone by J.A. Jance - newest in her J.P. Beaumont series
Decider and Second Wind by Dick Francis - both rereads
Mystery Thrillers:
4th of July by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
Homefront by Chuck Logan - really like this series
At Hell's Gate by Ethan Black - could be in the mystery section, but more sensational. Good.
Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay - a serial killer is our hero in this series, but he only kills bad guys.
Romantic Thrillers:
The Nosy Neighbor by Fern Michaels
Midnight Rain by Holly Lisle - was expecting this to be sf/fantasy, but wasn't. Didn't realize Lisle wrote in other genres. Enjoyed it.
Killer Takes All by Erica Spindler
Fairly good month - this month is off and running - already on book 8, though one was a graphic novel. So that's 18 for the month, 191 for the year.

Date: 2005-10-12 08:12 pm (UTC)I haven't read those 2 - may have tried the Frost book, not sure.
I have a bad track record with more "literary" books - I'm not sure
if it's them or me, though :)
