eviltammy: (hello)
Still haven't scanned pictures from the wedding to put up yet, but here's the basic trip report:

Set out on Wed. June 28 in the midafternoon, saw my friend Joan briefly in Elkin, NC, drove up into Virginia until I-77 hit I-81, got a few miles up on I-81 and stopped for the night. Thursday, I drove and drove and peed and drove and drove and peed - from now on referred to as DDP. I ended up in Cortland, NY and saw [livejournal.com profile] elismor. We had dinner and chatted, I grossed her out with my burn scar and then went back to the hotel for the night. I find it *highly suspicious* that her horse came up lame and she couldn't go riding that weekend - I had invited her to be my date for the wedding, but she declined. Hmmpf.

Friday I DDP'd from Cortland to Stonington, ME - skipping the traffic snarls, rain, and fog delays. Checked into the B&B and my hosts let me use their phone to check in with my cousin back in SC (she was feeding the cats) because cell coverage was spotty. Given that I was in Maine, aka Stephen King country, and his last book was about a cell phone pulse turning people into zombie-like creatures, I'm not sure this was a bad thing.

Saturday, I frittered around town hoping to spot someone I knew - which meant either Annmarie or Garrett, since I knew no one else :) Stonington is GORGEOUS. That was when I first started realizing that I had made a mistake by not booking at least one more day. The waitress at lunch told me where the church was, so I went back to the B&B, rested and dressed, and went to church :) Saw Garrett first and, damn, I'm getting old - wasn't he just 12 the other year? What was worse was my first thought at a casual glance was "Cute guy! Wait. OMG that's GARRETT! NONOnoonoooooooo! Bad thoughts! Must scrub brain!" It was distressing :)

The wedding was very nice - fairly traditional, I think - haven't been to many:) The bridesmaids were in cranberry (I'm guessing - very nice) and the groomsmen in black with cranberry accents. The bride was in white and looked gorgeous! The groom had to wipe tears from his eyes during the ceremony. Bubbles were blown as the newly marrieds came out of the church. The reception was fun - I met lots of people who were very happy that I liked Stonington and were impressed that I drove up from SC :) There was much drinking and dancing and eating. I did get up for the bouquet thing - luckily it went to someone else. It, and the garter, were done more in a musical chairs format than throwing - it was passed around until the music stopped; whoever had it then got it. I went outside later to get some air and chatted with Annmarie et al. Around 9pm, I left - the party went on :)

Sunday was another DDP day, though not as long, since I only went to Bedford, Mass, where I met up with Margie. We talked and watched vids and ate and talked and watched vids. Monday, I got and drove to Agawam and saw Gail, who took me to lunch. We went back to her place and chatted more, then she gave me a couple of bottles of water and I left. I DDP'd to Allentown, PA where I stopped for the night. Tuesday, I DDP'd to around Roanoke, VA - around an hour away from where I stopped the first night - there was some seriously heavy rain two or three times which caused some people to pull off the road for a bit. Wednesday, I stopped in Elkin and had lunch with Joan(car and work troubles had made our first trip brief) and then DDP'd my way home. I arrived home around a half an hour later than I had set out the week before.

The cats were fine, the dog was fine, the house was fine, I was tired for days. But it was fun - I like driving and it was nice to get away from everything here for a bit. And it was great seeing everyone! My next trip should be in October, when I go to Memphis to see [livejournal.com profile] ithidrial and [livejournal.com profile] ninjababe. Unless there's going to be a huge influx of you people to Dragoncon - I'd definitely do an overnight for that.

I'll tell y'all when I get the pictures up! Though Annmarie's put some up already, I think. I'll have to hunt for the url.
