Titles: done!

Killjoy by Julie Garwood
- An analyst at the FBI, Avery is joining her aunt Carrie at a week-long vacation at a remote spa. But when she gets there, Carrie is missing. In her search, she teams up with John Paul Renard, who's tracking a murderer who may have had a hand in Carrie's disappearance. Third in a related series. I like Garwood - she's pretty much got the idea down pat - two disparate people caught up in perilous situations, villains, lust... This one didn't thrill as much as the previous ones, but still a solid entry.

Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi
- I love Scalzi :) - in fact, I just took a brief moment to go put all his sf books on my amazon wishlist :) I have two of his nonfiction (You're Not Fooling..., and Hate Mail, which I read this month) and I check his blog daily. It's a sad day when there's no Scalzi. So, beware - I'm biased. But for a good reason - the man can WRITE! This is a retelling of _The Last Colony_ through the eyes of Zoe, a teenage girl. Zoe is a great character, with a well-defined voice and a nice sense of snark. A good intro for teens getting into SF, but still an excellent adult read.

The Double Eagle by James Twining
- a new-to-me author in the thriller field, along the lines of James Rollins, Clive Cussler, etc. An ex-CIA agent turned jewel thief tries to get out of the thieving business, but gets caught between a murderous black market dealer and the FBI agent trying to restart a stalled career by finding 5 missing Double Eagle gold coins stolen from Fort Knox. (Oddly enough, the coins turn up in Stuart Woods' _Hot Mahogany_ which just came out.) Nice thriller, a bit drawn out, but definitely fun. Follow up with _The Black Sun_ (Nazis!) and a new one coming out in 2009.

Private Lives by Karen Young
- Nice convoluted romantic thriller. Orphaned at five, Elizabeth never really knew her two younger sisters (who were adopted together) and learned to depend on herself and her foster sister Gina. Now in her thirties and an award-winning children's author, her ordered life is thrown into chaos: Gina moves in with her young daughter while in a nasty custody battle with her ex-boyfriend; the boyfriend's reluctant lawyer has a connection with Gina's past; her elderly next door neighbor may ill; and the publicity about her books has allowed her long-lost sisters to make contact. Good potboiler stuff :)
