Y'all know I'm taking a library class, right? I think I mentioned it.

The class is Adult Programming and Materials - and the biggest part of our grade comes from doing book reports :) {Waits for everyone to stop giggling at her passing grade of no effort}

We have eleven weeks of reports - we have to do nine, at least - and one week is reader's choice. This week's genre is mystery/detective (thrillers, true crime and serial killers) {waits for anyone who's ever read her list of books read to stop laughing again} (out of the 40 something books I've read so far this year, over 30 could be considered in this genre). I did the report for this one the other week - and the one for the SF/Fantasy/Graphic Novel week in late March.

Next week's genre? Erotica; games; controversial materials. I get to read smut for school! {waits for everyone to stop giggling again}{yes, we all know I'm a smut fiend} Oh, I suppose I could read a book about gaming or something about banned books (or a banned book:g:), but, come on, this is me we're talking about.

So I'm going to read Dark Love: 22 All-Original Tales of Lust and Obsession and also get another book off my TBR list (mine is a hardcover version).

Here's our list and my choices:
1. Bestsellers as a genre: Running Hot by Jayne Ann Krentz
2. Romance: Strange Bedpersons by Jennifer Crusie
3. Christian Fiction or Spiritual Nonfiction: Cloudy Jewel by Grace Livingston Hill
4. Mystery/Detective: A Deadly Silver Sea by Bob Morris
5. Erotica/games/controversial material: Dark Love (unless, of course, the stories suck)
6. Science/History/Politics: (I figure I can always throw in a western here :g:)
7. Graphic novels/SF/Fantasy: Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett
8. Reader's Choice: I'll grab a book I've read this year :)
9. Contemporary quality fiction/poetry/drama: here I'm taking suggestions
10. Ethnic fiction/poetry/drama: Shinju by Laura Joh Rowland - this was [livejournal.com profile] ithildyn's suggestion - a historical Japanese mystery. And if I hate it, it's her fault :snerk:
11. Sports/history/biography: not sure why history is listed here again, but a sports mystery is always a possibility and I've got a couple of sports biographies that I could read.

Obviously I'm planning to do all eleven. I'm thinking about "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy for #9 - bleak dystopian fiction (plus prep for the movie ;> ) Anyone read it?

It'll be hard, I'm sure - I'll just have to fight through the pain...

I just read "50/50" by Dean Karnaszes, the tale of him running 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 consecutive days. Very easy read, pretty entertaining, not very technical, and not insanely detailed. It's a running book and yet it's not. It's stuck in my mind since I just read it. Lorraine Moller wrote "On the Wings of Mercury", she's really sweet and was definitely a pioneer in women's running, that's on my list. (It's amazing how vehemently early race organizers kept women from marathon-type events, and nowadays it's typically 60/40 females to males in running events).

Just some ideas.
