That was cool!
Jul. 29th, 2009 09:41 pmWas on Twitter and Tobias Buckell (SF author) was saying something about the college campus he was on. Well, he's actually at my alma mater, Wofford College - they have a summer writing program for high school students called Shared Worlds, where they write in a shared world (I think - didn't read the whole thing) and Buckell is one of the teachers/presenters. So I said something about it being a nice campus and a good college and joked about stalking him :) and he told me there was a program tonight. He and a couple of the other teacher/presenter/writers were doing a reading for the class and whoever else showed up. So I went.
I've read three of TB's books and enjoyed them. The other two were Jeff Vandemeer, who I had heard of but never read, and Will Hindmarch, who I had never heard of. I picked up a couple of TB's books and one of JV's - Hindmarch has several short stories available on his website. And they each did a reading. Was very cool. JV's upcoming book is fantasy noir and has some fantastic imagery, WH does a lot with gaming and his story was excellent - called Griefer and is on his site. TB read a short story too - very funny. They opened the floor for questions and then JV & TB signed books. So I have autographed copies :) [does that mean I need to kill them now so my copies will be worth big $$?]
And - except maybe the lady from Barnes & Noble who was there selling books - I think I was the oldest person there. Kinda disconcerting.
Was majorly fun.
